Easy Pointers For Back yard Patio Designs
Author: David B. Henry
Usually, patio styles are built around the existing house and the property grade. Attention should be given to additional outdoor living spots around the patio, and patios really should be made to function on it's own or along with the other outdoor areas. Utilizing various colors and designs of patio tile will enable patio designs to be unique, regardless of other places around the home or could be built to fit in with a walkway around flower beds or a swimming pool.
Since a patio is usually be situated close to the home, the patio styles should either supplement or contrast the current design of the home in style and colour. Most concrete patios are left in the common grey color, but artificial additives could be utilized to be able to change the colour of the cement to essentially any color desired. Numerous different styles for sculpting the sides and surface of fresh concrete are obtainable, to allow a sturdy concrete patio to appear and feel like tiles or stones.
Many patio designs integrate concrete for a cost-saving reason as individual stone patios can get costly. Not only is the price of the paving bricks greater than concrete, but installing prices are higher. It is considerably easier to install a concrete slab and form it than it would be to make the underlying gravel and sand perfectly to grade and install stones.
Utilizing Imagination With Terrace Styles
It does not make a difference what you look at in building or household improvement publications, there is nothing that says patio designs need to follow the primary design of the house. They can wrap close to a house corner if more outdoor space is required and can be incorporated into a deck on an additional grade of the home. When the terrain slants away to one side from the house, the patio could contain stairs leading to another grade of a wood deck on the portion of the home with a greater elevation.
It is true that terrace designs are supposed to be able to provide extra outside living space and the individual having to pay for the project should really get to choose the style. Something to keep in mind whenever planning and constructing your patio deck is that if the house is bought, the existing patio design could have a beneficial effect on the buyer and be a primaryselling point or it might have a negative impression and they may opt to demolish it and start over .
The point is, patio styles can uniquely reflect the taste from the property owner, as well as enhance the worth of the residence. When the homeowner is spending the time and expenditure of putting in a patio, it may at the same time add something the property value too.
Several times a terrace could make an region transitional in between the house and other outdoor recreation areas for example a pool, which offers a location for water to be able to drip from bathing suits before they go into the home, tracking the water into your kitchen area or living room. Additional absorbing outdoor mats can also gather soil and debris from the feet to prevent damage to costly flooring.
Whether the terrace is constructed of decorative bricks on fine sand or out of poured in place cement is really dependent on taste, but the types of materials as well as colorings should match the overall landscaping design of the residence. Usually, a terrace will be added to the back of a residence for additional privacy, although building a patio to the front could also be unique and also appealing.

I need some cost effective ideas to make low water usage, low pollen level back yard in a rental house.?
I lease where I live and currently have dead grass yard and huge tall fence border trees that cannot be removed. I want a lovely easy care backyard. Planning on laying some of the 12×12 concrete tiles down for a patio, in lieu of 1/2 of the lawn. I cannot afford to cover the whole yard in pavers (it is 16 x 65′) What else can I do that is cheap and nice, without planting more plants? Cant run wiring or water.
will the owner of the house ok this? if so put down plastic sheeting or the fabric that goes under mulch and then go look at colorful gravel choices and have that put about 2 inches deep all over the area, its what we do here in las vegas. then you can plant some cactus if you like or just leave it with no plantings, however the neighbors pollen will still get to you. its not all that cheap but it looks nice when finished. you can even put up plastic lawn edging and use a pattern like a wave or something and put down two distinct patterns of gravel. you could add some fake plants if you like for a little color.
questions about wedding seating..?
fiance and I are getting married in his parents backyard, on their patio. it’s going to be a small affair (under 30 people, family only) and I was thinking we could just set up the tables and place settings in a sort of halfmoon manner, so they’d be facing the direction of where we’ll be married. I just feel it’d be easier since there isn’t a lot of space to set up the tables and chairs and then we don’t have to deal with setting it up after the ceremony. any ideas? I understand it’s not traditional and all of that, it just seems to make logical sense in my mind. thanks!
What kind of flooring can I put in my new laundry room?
I’m looking for flooring ideas for my new laundry room. The room is currently a sunroom that was added onto the house so it currently has carpet. It used to be part of the patio. The room is also the entrance from the backyard and the garage so it will also be used as a kind of mudroom where wet and muddy things will be left, such as muddy shoes. I’m looking for something that is non-porous and easy to clean because it will be wet sometimes so carpet, wood, and laminate are out of the question. I was looking into tile, but I sort of want something that will be non-skid when wet. I could use cement like in the garage if that is the best choice, but I really want it to look nice since it now is a room of the main house. Does anyone have any ideas? What do you use in your laundry or mudroom?
First thing, any hard surface can be slippery when wet .. Saying that , your best options are a class 3 or 4 tile, either ceramic or porcelain. Slate as one person suggested , fits your needs but needs a little more up keep because its a natural stone and needs sealing before, after and occasionally there after.. Now a good quality vinyl that has a multi colored or stone look also is a good option.. The multi coloring and or stone look will hide day to day dirt and mess from dried mud etc.. Same is true w/ tiles, Use a multi shaded or colored tile to help hide stuff between cleanings.
Look around your local flooring stores (HD and Lowes wont carry it) for Interceramic Flagstone. Fits your needs to a “T” Very slip resistant ( class 4), easy to clean even through it s fairly rough, and multi tonal. Google Interceramic.

questions about outdoor patios…?
Hi there!… I live in Central- Virginia and I would like to create a patio in my back yard and i had a few questions:
Firstly i really love the look of some pavers but others i find very unattractive, i picked out these:
http://www.belgard.biz/collections.htm?section=0&ind=3
as my favorite and id like to use this product but it says nothing about the cost. Any idea on a cost per square foot?
Second my backyard slopes slightly away from the house and it very bumpy in areas is it necessary to level before putting down gravel for pavers?
Third the the location where I would like the patio is at the base of my back porch and the stairs off the back would go onto the patio. would i redo the stairs onto the patio or put the patio around the stairs?
Lastly i have read that there is no cement or mortar necessary for laying pavers…. is it too easy for the pavers to come up? or when it rains does the sand wash up from the joints?
Thank you for all your help answer all my questions well for best answer!
I forgot to add that i would like to add an outdoor kitchen too and i have a regular minifridge in my garage… if its covered by the counter will it be safe for outdoor use??
also i have a grill that is on wheels and not made for a counter to mount… is it possible to mount it anyway?
For VA, you will need a minimum of 5-6″ base. If these steps are not taken, the entire job will heave, rot and break within 1 year. Ruining all that you paid and worked for.
You must dig down, and remove, 6 inches of soil. Add 1 inch of sand. Screed it level. Tamp it down VERY WELL. Then add 4 inches of Gravel. Any variety mix will do (as long as they are not uniform). Tamp this down (lightly). Add another 1 inch of sand. screed level. Tamp down hard. Now you may begin laying the stone down. When finished laying the stone, sweep fine sand over the entire patio, leaving excess sand on the patio, and tamp again. Sweep the remaining sand into every joint again, remove any excess, and you now have an excellent patio.
Hint: Always place the patio at least 1 inch below the door, or entryway. Start from that point and place a stake in the ground. Measure 6 inches up from the ground, mark the stake, and tie a stong twine line there. Go to the other places (corners) you wish to have the patio and drive each stake. Use a string level (aka line level), hang it from the string from the first stake, tie it to the next keeping the line level. Repeat all around the perimeter. Measure where 6 inches down is, to the lowest point (highest string to ground) and you will know where the minimum 6 inches starts at. Level everthing from there.
This is how you figure out how much Gravel and sand you’ll need.
Gravel;
For 4″ of gravel you will need to calculate the volume. Length x Width x Height = Volume
Example: For a 10′ X 10′ patio with 4″ of gravel, you will need (10 X 10 X .333)= 34 cubic feet or 1.25 cubic yards.
Sand;
Once you have the amount of gravel needed, calculate the amount of sand. You will need 1″ of sand above the gravel base. You must allow for sand to filter into the gravel base and space between bricks.
Example: For a 10′ X 10′ patio, 1.25 cubic yards of gravel is needed. Multiply 1.25 X .333 to calculate the amount of sand needed. You will need .42 cubic yards of sand or 11 cubic feet of sand.
How romantic to have a small wedding in your in-law’s backyard! arrange the seating how ever you want to girl! It’s your special day and these days people are so progressive about weddings that all the traditional “rules” have been disregarded by now. What matters is that you enjoy your day with your family and loved ones. They will remember how beautiful you looked, how happy everyone was…not about how the chairs were arranged. Order the chairs and do a dry run in the backyard to make sure that every seat has a good view and that you and your bridal party can maneuver around the seating. Also check with your photographer, who can also recommend the best arrangement to allow for the best candid photos. Congratulations on the wedding!
Privacy fencing featured on HGTV.?
Hi,
Does anyone know where I can purchase the fencing featured on Design on a Dime and Designed to Sell? The fencing appears to be bamboo and it comes rolled up. It is unrolled and attached to either a chain link fence (Design on a Dime) or against a wooden patio fence (Designed to Sell).
Or, if you have any inexpensive ideas for creating more privacy between my neighbors back yard and mine, I’d appreciate it. There is a chain link fence, separating our backyards, but I crave more privacy and a way to block the noise from the freeway (which is close to my neighborhood). Wooden fencing will be too expensive for me, right now. I wouldn’t mind using plants, I thought about using arborviate, but it grows too large in circumference (and I’d lose yard space).
So, yes, I’m looking for the perfect fence: cheap, easy to install and will create privacy and noise reduction.
Thanks to all who read and answer! I appreciate your help!
